Physical Education in a safe and supportive environment plays a vital part in the physical development and well-being of the whole child and is of equal importance to and complementary to other subjects. A broad and balanced physical education curriculum is intended to provide for pupils’ increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies in a variety of situations. Through the selection of differentiated and logically developed tasks, it is intended that pupils, irrespective of their ability, will enjoy success and be further motivated to develop their potential.
A balance of individual, paired and group activities, in co-operative, collaborative and competitive situations, aims to cater for the preferences, strengths and needs of every pupil. These activities aim to promote a broad base of movement knowledge, skills and understanding. They also aim to develop a pupil’s ability to work independently and to respond appropriately and sympathetically to others.
There are two P.E. sessions each week, supplemented with other physical activity such Wake and Shake and a five minute jog around the playground. The lesson content in Early Years and KS1 focuses on fundamental skills of control, movement and flexibility. These skills are built on in KS2 and the children have a range of specific games skills, gymnastics, yoga and dance. The school takes advantage of specialist coaches where appropriate to further pupils' development. PE lessons take place in the hall, the playgound or school field, as appropriate. We plan our games lessons to prepare for tournaments with other schools. Swimming lessons form part of the P.E. programme and currently we take the Y3 in the first two terms and Y2 and children in Y5 and Y6 who have not yet achieved their 25m in swimming. A voluntary contribution is requested for swimming.
We have an extensive range of after school clubs which further enhances the pupils' experience.
