Our Curriculum

At Winchcombe Abbey CE Primary School we passionately believe that the children’s needs and interests are rightly at the heart of our curriculum.

As a school we never stand still in our desire to drive forward the experiences and opportunities that we offer the children. Since the publication of the revised National Curriculum in 2014 we have continued to develop the our provision. 

We use a thematic approach to deliver the curriculum as we believe it helps children make ‘links’ within their learning, thus aiding their understanding. Each class undertakes a theme each term and a “take off” experience, such as a visit, visitor or experience, is used to stimulate interest and promote a ‘wow’ moment to launch the theme. The learning journey ends with a landing day when the unit of work is celebrated.  Learning in our school is developed through a curriculum that is both rich and vibrant, containing many first hand experiences which help to put the children’s learning into context; artists, scientists, musicians, actors, clergy, charity representatives, as well as sportsmen and women are all regular visitors to the school.

We fully utilise our unique and amazing local environment. Our school is situated in the ancient Anglo Saxon town of Winchcombe, once the capital of England. We are host to one of the three most important archaeological sites in the country.  We have vast riches of Tudor history on our doorstep with Sudeley Castle nearby in which Queen Katherine Parr is entombed, not to mention ancient ruins of Abbeys from times gone by and the natural beauty of the Cotswolds.

We use a number of different approaches to explore and deliver the themes to ensure we enable our children to develop all the skills they need to be confident and successful learners.   We involve our children from the start of the planning stage of the new curriculum as we value their ideas and contributions. We firmly believe that children learn best when they are able to steer and direct their own learning.  We want our children to be to develop an unquenchable thirst for learning through hands on, creative, problem solving activities and challenges allowing them to be inquisitive and curious; through this preparing them to be ready to face the future demands of learning in Secondary School, so that they are ready to take their place as citizens in Modern Britain.
